Saturday morning started with a Cross Country meet. This was a large meet with hundreds of students participating from across the Twin Cities area. I zoomed in on the starting line. This is about 25% of the starting line.

The finish line................You can see how hard they are running as everyone tries to run a blitz at the end. Some of these young women run 4 K in under 16 minutes, so you can see why they are working so hard.

This is after the race.......she had just finished. In case you are wondering why there is not a picture of Laura actually finishing the race............... At the finish you can either cheer or take pictures. This mom is not that coordinated to do both at once:):)

Weather is Minnesota is unpredictable, Last night we were at the Twins game and the wind was blowing right in our face. Which would have been great if the temperature was 30 degrees warmer,. IT felt downright cold. We walked around the stadium for some hot cocoa.
I was knitting some wool socks and needless to day, they worked perfect for mittens!!!

Here are some pictures of the Cornell Lake Artist Fair, held on Labor Day weekend. We had good weather, it looked threatening a couple times, but the rain held off. The weather is tricky when you have an outdoor event.!!

We had a variety of art work from painting, crocheting, wood chairs, candles, and jewelry. Notice the zucchini bread --- It was grown on the lake, this adds a new twist to grown locally.

June and Graduation Season

June is upon us and so is graduation and wedding season. My son just graduated from college, he has 4 weddings to attend and he is in three of them. Definitely a busy time for celebrations.

Here is what is going on in my creative world: I have finished 4 college afghans and am working on the 5th one. the fifth one is for my neice, so I wanted to make a special one for her. Maddie chose Gaelic Bay Afghan which I believe is from Lion Brand Yarn. It is a solid, ocean wave type of pattern-- so it will take some time to get it done. Maddie is attending Gonzaga University with school colors of read white and blue. I definitely feel like I am working on a patrotic project. Pictures to follow

My daughter Laura was on a mission trip to Montana at the end of July. She took many pictures, as teenagers do, and this one we both love.

It was taken from the car at a distance. These are wild horses grazing at a stream in Montana. What a beautiful picture with nature at its best.

Hello Everyone,

I am excited to be back to blogging This summer has flown by and it is only two weeksuntil the "boys" are back in college and Laura starts her junior year in high school.

The summer weather usually sticks around through October. In fact September is a beautiful month, highs in the 70/s and lows in the 50's and lots of sunshine.

Here is what is "on my hook" these days: granny square afghan with Michigan Tech colors, dishcloths in multiple colors, sweater top in cayon simply soft for moi!! and I am starting fingerless gloves. For knitting, I continue with knitting wool socks. Lately I have been perusing knitting patterns for my next project. For sewing, the handbags continue and quilted Christmas doilies.

One of my nephews gave me a pair or Icelandic mittens. Guess what? I am attempting to duplicate the pattern with some Icelandic wool yarn. Knitting these mittens is not as challenging as knitting lapland socks. (thank goodness!!!) More on these mittens later....

Well I am glad to be back and let me know how you are doing!

Scoks, Socks and Socks Part II

Here are the socks I have been creating. This is the same pattern as the Lapland socks. The socks are made with 100% wool yarn. Some of the yarn is new and some is from my stash. These are heavier socks for boots. Living in Minnesota, we can use these in the winter!!!!

Sonja, our exchange student taught me how to knit socks and here is a sample of my work. These are 100% wool socks and are very warm. Now that spring is here, we have to wait to wear this until fall. I love the way the colors turned out on this one.

I finished these Lapland socks a few days ago. They turned out beautiful. So beautiful, I would rather admire the socks than wear them!!! Right now they are a work of art, and besides it is great to have the pattern for future socks.
These socks were challenging, which I enjoyed. I am trying to learn how to make socks while I have Sonja, my own tutor here. So the next month will be sock creation month.

Lapland socks

Sonja, our Exchange student from Finiland, is teaching me how to knit Lapland socks.
Since I primarily am a crocheter,   I have been learning how to knit.   It has been a fun project, I have done a little frogging,   but not alot. Which I am grateful for. LOL

Sonja tells me this is a dying art in Finland,   less people are knitting these days, and it is getting hard to find someone who hand knits socks, and especially hard to find someone who can knit the Lapland design.

As you can see, it is a complicated design, one has to be precise in stitching, one stitch can throw off your whole pattern. This is my first pair of socks so it is not perfect, but they turned out pretty well.

The cuff measures 13 inches long and the foot is 10 inches long. The design is a traditional Lapland design, with traditional Lapland colors . The black background can be a different color, we chose black as it looks classy.

So let me know what you think. If you need a pair of Lapland socks or other socks let me know.

We are digging out after another snowstorm. This is the most snow we have received in February in 6 years. I shoveled three times yesterday. Everytime I finished shoveling, the sidewalk would be covered. There still is more snow to shovel today.
All in all we received about 12 inches of snow. The good news is that it is light snow, not the "heart attack snow"

Unique Hat and Scarf Designs

This tan colored hat is perfect match or accent for all winter coats. It can be casual or dressy -- depending on the coat or sweater. This hat is a combination of wool and acrylic, with a faux fur trim. Made to order -- just let me know.

I have been experimenting with new hat designs. Now that I have "The Head" from my dear friend Mary - the hats are realistically displayed. This hat is a combination of wool and acrylic. It definitely keeps you warm in the winter. The flower is made from cotton and the edging is a unique European trim from Norway. Pink, fuchsia and gray look great on a black background.

These are Laura's friends modeling my designer hats. the blue hat on the left is a combination of wool and cotton. There is a flower on the top made of cotton and accented with a special threat from Norway.

The middle and the right hats are the same hat. They are made of acrylic yarn and loook just like the hats you see in the outdoor stores.

These gals could not believe I made these hats, for me it is fun!!

Here is a cotton hat, made for a friends' sister. I choose to make it in cotton as Sally lives in California and certainly does not need a wool hat like us Minnesotan's. The colors are maroon and accented with gold/white. Just like the University of Minnesota colors!!

Sonja's Homemade Fudge

Here is Sonja, our exchange student from Finland, with the final product . TA DA (drum roll please) homemade fudge. This is her first ever attempt at homemade fudge and it turned out fantastic.

We packaged and gave it away to friends and family.
Laura told me that I give away all the fudge, so we needed to make some more, which we did at Grandma's during Christmas.

Minnesota Musing

We survived the biggest storm in 10 years. It went on for three days -- rain, snow, ice and a combination of those three. We were out of town for two days of the storm and thanks to some neighborhood elves, our driveway was cleared off. So we come home to 18 more inches of snow. What a different that makes!!!

We have an exchange student from Finland for the next couple of months. Sonja is a great person and settling into life at our house. Our two boys are home from college and Laura (sophomore in high school) , they all keep Sonja busy. But not too busy as Sonja is teaching me how to knit socks with a Lapland design.

The socks will be super cool when they are done. The design is complicated for me, sometimes one is working with 5 different colors of yarn. So keeping all that straight is a challenge -- especially when one is use to crocheting.

Knitting and crocheting are very different works of art -- which I am sure you can all agree.

Thanksgiving napkin Holders

Thanksgiving weekend was relaxing and busy at the same time. Sonja, our exchange student from Finland moved in. The boys were home from college. Now the house is quiet again, time for reading and crocheting. Before I go, here is a picture of the Thanksgiving Napkin Holders.
One of our Thanksgiving traditions is cookie turkey cookie napkin holders, they are made out of fridge stripe cookies, fan shaped gum drops , candy corn for a beak, and are "glued" together with melted chocolate chips. So do they look like turkeys???

Boutique

Here I am at last week's boutique. It is amazing to see how your display evolves -- from a bare table to a beautiful display of creativity.

The doll in the right is my doll as a child. I remember it was so cool that she could open and close her eyes when lying down. She makes a great model for baby hats, don't you think?
On the left side is my homemade jam - rhubarb/strawberry jam -- notice they are red and green, that is because there are different types of rhubarb plants -- sweet red and tart green stalks. It makes a colorful display for the holidays.

In the middle is my prized creations of handbags. I just love these. I really don't have a favorite, they are all gorgeous. For me it is so much fun designing and putting the colors together. These handbags are versatile, colorful and , of course, uniquely designed.

Notice on the wall is a poster of Meryl Streep. Pretty cool me and my "friend" Meryl. LOL

Boutiques

The people are what I enjoy the most. I love to meet my customers and other artists. Browsing the boutiques energizes me as well. There certainly are some very creative and talented people out there.

Our beautiful fall is continuing. Recently we took a walk along the Mississippi River in Downtown Minneapolis. It was late afternoon and the sun was peaking through the clouds. I love the contrast in Colors.
This picture is of the Stone Arch Bridge, it is about 100 years old and is now used as a walking and biking path.

Oh yes, Fall is arriving in Minnesota.
September was a beautiful month, sunny and mid seventies almost every day. As soon as October hit, bam the temps dropped below freezing right away. We have already had measureable snow.
It was really different seeing the snow on the red colored trees. usually the trees drop their leaves first and then it snows So we had "pink" trees for a couple of hours.

With fall brings Artisan Fairs. And I am so excited, the Artisan fair I started has filled up with vendors. The first Annual Chanhasssen Artisan Fair is slated for November 7,th 10 am to 3 pm at Chanhassen Recreation Center. This is the first time I am going to be selling at a fair, so any suggestions are appreciated.

I have been busy making and creating my items from purses to baby blankets. I should have a variety of items -- probably about 10 different items to sell. So this should be fun and I am definitely looking forward to it.

It has been a great week, with all the PGA excitement. Everyone is talking about it, even at the sewing, grocery and yarn stores!! In some ways we are sad to see the PGA end.

I attended the practice rounds on Tuesday. My sons have worked at Hazeltine for 7 years so I had a personalized tour of the golf course. They knew the tough holes, what makes them tough and all the mechanics that goes into golf.

Greeting from Chanhassen, Minnesota, where we have two new events taking place.

Chanhassen was designated as the #2 best small town to live in by Money Magazine. We are happy about the designation.

The other happening is the PGA which starts this week. My kids have been caddies at Hazeltine golf course for 7 years and they are fortunate to be able to work in the PGA. They are selling merchandise pictures of the course. I am so happy they are able to experience the excitement of the PGA.

They know the couse very well, and when a local TV station did a story on one of the holes, the kids noticed it was old footage. Trees which had been cut down a couple years ago were still in the footage.

Today thru Wednesday are the practice rounds . The public can view the practice rounds, so it will be interesting to hear the4ir reactions.

Well it has been awhile since I have posted. Summer is the time everyone is so busy.
I did something I have not done in awhile, went to the lake for a week. I had 5 different friends come during the week and it worked out great.
So what did I do all week? Relaxed and created new items. It was great sewing and looking out at the lake. One never tires of that view.
Thanks to all my friends who came, next year we will try to do it again.

Did anyone watch the pregame activities for the All Star game? They recognized 30 All Stars whose volunteering have made a difference in the lives of others. One person they recognized is a crocheter who has made 18,000 hats for people with cancer.

Minnesota and Illinois Musings

Yes we had a great weekend in Chicago. We are baseball fans, and each year we take a trip to a away game ball park. This year it was Wrigley.

We booked our tickets in January so we have been looking forward to it for sometime. It was a very fun weekend, the weather was good, and Chicagoans went out of their way to talk to you.

There was a bit of a rain delay in the start of the game, but it cleared off during the game and by the end we were in the sun. Temps were cold - like see your breath cold - but we dressed warm and it worked out well.

Wrigley field was amazing. to think it is almost 100 years old and still in use. We thought about all the people who have attended the games during the past 100 years. Our Twins won the game we attended, although it was a little tense there in the 9th inning. Of course we were there to enjoy the game so it really did not matter who won -- we love to watch baseball.

On Saturday night we walked around downtown Chicago, and ate dinner at the ESPN restaurant. We got back to our hotel at 10 pm -- we were gone 11 hours and it went fast.

What a fun weekend -- if you are a baseball fan this is a great trip to take with your family.

Greetings from Minnesota where the weather is great.
We are having beautiful sunny days with temps in the mid 70's and low humidity. Today is another bright sunny day in store for us. We could use a little rain and hopefully will get some this week.

My garden is almost planted, just need to plant the onions, Then the weeding starts! Hopefully I can keep on top of the weeds. I guess if you make a point to spend 5 minutes in your garden every day, you can keep on top of the weeds. Sounds like a good idea, I'll let you know how that goes!

What is on my hook? I just finished a college afghan for my godson. I am very pleased with the results! Pictures to be posted.

He is attending the University of Wisconsin which is my alma mater, so I have to say Go Badgers!!!

This afghan is for a young gal attending the University of South Dakota. USD's colors are maroon, black and white. The afghan is multicolored, and 6 feet long so it can be used on her bed or a wrap around for "chilling".

Today is a perfect day, sunny, warm, temps around 70. It does not get much better than this.
This weekend was a gardening weekend, we actually rototilled the garden and I can start planting.

First I will start with the cold weather plants - cucumbers, broccoli, winter squash and onions.
We still can get a frost in May, so the warm weather plants can be planted at the end of the month. I put alot of leaves in the garden last fall, so that should help with the soil.

I am definitely looking forward to the garden season. So it will be interesting to see how the garden grows.

Well I have been commissioned to do two college afghans -- one for the University of Wisconsin and the other for the University of South Dakota.
This is exciting as I am venturing into new territory - University of South Dakota. The colors are maroon, white and black which makes for an interesting color combination.

Spring as finally sprung -- the birds are singing their sweet songs, the grass is starting to turn green and the temperatures are warm enough to walk outside in shirts. This is the time of the year we love because the weather only gets better and better.

So what is on my hook? A college afghan for my nephew, dishcloth scrubbies, Rodney the Rectangles and a new purse. Yep that is alot of creativity on my plate and I enjoy it.

Now I have to figure out how to do this outside!!!

Spring is trying to come, we had a little snow this past weekend. It is sunny and trying to get warm. A bit windy, so once the wind settles down, things will really start growing.

I like the change of seasons, but after 5 months of cold weather it is time for spring.

One thing about Minnesota is many people enjoy being out of doors, especially in the warmer weather. Alot of people do not take summer vacations because they want to enjoy the weather here.

So spring weather cannot come fast enough -- especially for Minnesota.

Minnesota Musings

This time of year we say, "Spring is coming, I can feel it!" Well I can honestly say I do not "feel" spring this week.
You ask why? Well the weather has turned a bit cold for us, we had a typical storm move through and afterwards came the cold winds and temperatures, like below zero temps and wind chills again. Not too much fun this late in the winter.
They say we are going to get warmer, like temps in the 50's in a couple days, maybe then I can "feel" spring is in the air.
This week, I started a college afghan for my nephew and Godson. He will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This warrents a special afghan pattern, so I am experimenting, with the shadowbox stitch. And red and white colors for Go Badgers!!!

So do you remember the exciting new spring design I was working on?

TA DA....drum roll please.....A New Spring Purse
The purse is done and I absolutely love the finished product!!!! (I just may keep this for myself!!)

I designed the yellow colors together for hope (remember Michelle Obama's Inguaral dress) and yellow is the new color for spring.

This spring purse is 12 inches tall, 14 inches wide and 5 inches across on the bottom. It is full lined, has 5 pockets, and a magnetic bottom closure on the top.

The model is my daughter, I took the photo as she was heading out for Nordic skiing. (The only time I could squeeze the picture in.))))

Hope you like this spring purse as much as I do!

Here is a picture of my pooch, a bassett hound. He is the most loyal dog you ever will have. His name is Barley and is 9 years old.

Barley loves to lay around in the sun, just watching him gets you relaxed.

So here he is -- all 50# of him.

My first attempt at Amigurumi and it turned out great.

Meet Rodney the Rectangle, Little Rodney is known for his friendly and happy personality. He is a great hit from toddlers to teenagers. And I don't know of an adult who would turn him down!

Last night we received 6 inches of snow. And today it was bright and sunny. I can tell spring is starting to come because our cold weather is not the below zero stuff as we experienced in January.

Guess what I did today?? I delivered a finished afghan to my brother and family. So now I have another UFO finished!!!

The pattern is a Vanna White pattern called "X's and O's" It is designed to fit perfectly in their living room, maroon with a blue square in the middle. This is a little different type of design, one that I did after the afghan was started. It is a challenge to do, add another color, after you have already started the afghan. It turned out great and they are appreciative of receiving it.

So what else am I working on? crocheted belt, Rudy the rectangle, and crocheted scarf for spring. The great thing about crochet is that one can be so creative with every project being different.

Knit-Out 2009 and Crochet

I attended my very first Knit-Out 2009 and Crochet at the Mall of America on 2/14/09.

It was a very fun and creative event. Here is what I did and my impressions:

I blocked out the entire day -- told my husband and kids that I was going to Mall of America for the day. They were surprised that I was going to go alone. I was not concerned because I knew I would be among friends. I was there from 9 am to 3pm and did not run out of people or creative endeavors to talk about.

Here are the displays and classes I participated in Fashion show, Turn Crocheted Motifs into a Colorful Scarf by Nili Elad, (Lion Brand Yarn Design Department), and Easy Beaded Crochet Jewelry with Debra Nettles (Leisure Arts). Each seminar was interesting and very creative. There were only a handful of people for the Motifs seminar, as most of the others were at the Knitting seminar right behind us. As crocheters we did not mind, we got to know Nili , our instructor and we helped each other with crocheting. I guess it was great to have someone speak our language!!

In the beaded crochet Jewerly seminar we were taught a "simple" way to crochet with beads. "Simple" for the experts. I am looking forward to trying this technique as it does not look too hard. Creating crocheted jewerly opens up a whole new realm of creative crochet. It is also an opportunity where we crocheters can connect with another creative endeavor -- beading. The fashion show I will talk about in another post.

Now I suppose you are wondering why I only attended three seminars. Well most of the time was spent in lines to see the vendors. The postive side was having the time to talk to many wonderful crafters. It is truly amazing to see what everyone creates and how they do it. The other positive side was that once you did get to the tables, the vendors were great. I received many patterns, yarn, Lion Brand bag, lighted knitting needles with batteries etc.

One funny story about the lines -- the main line curved around the mall. People were coming up and asking what we were standing in line for. We explained we were attending the Knit-Out 2009 and Crochet and were in line to see the vendors. One lady said, "I thought they were giving out money!!! That brought a chuckle to all of us.

Improvements for next year:

Allow two days to enjoy the Knit-Out 2009 and Crochet There are so many things to do and see, you really need two days to take it all in. I spoke to a veteran from last year and she spends one day for the lines and the other attending as many seminars as possible.

Take Part in the Fashion Show The fashion show had many knit items which is great for the overall success of the show. It was very interesting hearing about how they made the sweaters/scarves and what type of materials they used. I did not think we (crocheters) were represented. So next year I plan on wearing some of the items I crochet. Not that I can totally make up the difference but at least it is a start.

Learn to crochet standing up for the lines. Yes you read this right: Crochet standing up!!!. When you are standing in a line for awhile, it would be great to crochet along the way. Some people were doing this quite well, while others said they could not do both. Perhaps I can learn how to crochet standing up by next year!!! Any suggestionsco mments on how to do this would be helpful.

Knit-Out 2009 and Crochet

This is the main stage of the Knit-Out 2009 and Crochet. I was enjoying the fashion show. There was a great variety of items from afghans, sweaters to scarves. The majority of items were knitted and some were crocheted. It gets me motivated for next year. I'll have to participate in the fashion show.

Minnesota Musing

For President's day weekend, we are planning to go to Wisconsin and go Nordic Skiing.
Well we may have a change in plans, Minnesota is having a winter thaw and last night it rained. We lost almost all of our snow. Most people are not complaining as this change really helps cabin fever.
I think we will still go, but plan on bringing our hiking boots instead.

I am working on a new design for spring, One that I am really excited about. More about that later.
On my hook is an afghan for one of my brother and his family, plant dolies and a spring sweater.
This should keep me busy for awhile!!!

Baby Hats

Minnesota Musings

Well it is a beautiful day in Minnesota, clear sunny skies and temperature almost 30 degrees. It is a little windy but we are not complaining.

Today I am working on a Vanna White design -- afghan. It is mainly maroon, but has a cottage blue square in the middle of it. These colors match my brothers and sister-in-laws living room. I will post a picture when it is done.

Next I am working on a new design for spring, this may take awhile, but I am excited about the new spring colors and the design....more on that later.

This weekend I organized my pictures on my computer. I definitely will post pictures of my designs in the near future.

Time for a walk to enjoy this gorgeous day!!

Winter in Minnesota

We are back from Duluth and man oh man was it cold. Definitely had to go indoor things as the wind chill was way below zero.

Last night we walked along the shore of Lake Superior and it was one of the coldest walks I have had in awhile.

Today we saw the start of the Annual John Beargrease sled dog race. Very interesting, those dogs sure like to run. Well they had better like to run because it is a 375 mile race over the ice and snow.

Hope you all stay warm, our temperatures are suppose to get warmer by the end of the week.

New blog

Well here I am, a new blogger. I have thought about starting a blog for awhile, so am glad to be "on board"

Since I am a creative person, this blog will feature some of my creative inventions. My forte is crocheting, and I also like to sew, stamp and knit.

When one thinks of crocheting, they think of their grandmothers crocheted items. Even though crochet has a rich history, there are many modern patterns and items we create today. So I guess you could say, this is not all your Grandmothers crochet....

I create modern, practical and enviromentally friendly items and of course fun items too! Many of my designs are practical, like dishcloth scrubbies. Other designs are modern designs, like the afghan I created for my brother in law, which is a variation of a basket weave pattern. Several designs are environmentally friendly as I believe we can all save on the enviroment, even if we feel it is in a small way. And then there are the fun items, like flowers, and yes, you can even crochet food items.

I hope you enjoy my blog as much as I enjoy writing and putting it together. Please feel free to comment any time to my writings and pictures. Looking forward to hearing from you.
